New Report: User Permissions and Group Memberships

The new User Permissions and Group Memberships report provides a comprehensive overview of user accounts, their group memberships, and assigned access rights.

Key Features

  • Overview of user accounts and group memberships
  • Identification of directly assigned user permissions
  • Display of inherited privileges through group memberships
  • Analysis of VPN access permissions assigned directly to users or inherited through group memberships
  • Improved transparency for security audits and compliance reviews

VPN Access Coverage

The report identifies user and group permissions related to SSL VPN and IPsec VPN access, where available in the firewall configuration. It distinguishes between directly assigned and group-inherited permissions, helping administrators understand how users obtain VPN access rights.

The report evaluates configured access permissions, not active VPN sessions or historical VPN usage.

Strengthen Your Next Security Audit

Gain visibility into user permissions, inherited privileges, and configured VPN access rights. Use the report to identify unnecessary privileges, review access assignments, and assess compliance with the principle of least privilege.

Make user access reviews a standard part of your SonicWall security audits with Firewall Toolbox.

Version 3.1 (September 2026)

New Feature – TCP Connection Timeout Analysis and Management

September 2026

Firewall Toolbox now includes new reporting and API management capabilities for TCP connection timeout settings in SonicWall access rules.

TCP connection timeouts determine how long inactive TCP connections remain in the firewall's connection table. Incorrectly configured timeout values can lead to unnecessary resource consumption or premature connection termination, potentially affecting firewall performance and application stability.

New Report: TCP Connection Timeout Analysis

The new report identifies firewall access rules with TCP connection timeout values that differ from the default setting.

Key Features:

  • Identification of access rules with modified TCP timeout values
  • Overview of affected rules and their configured timeout settings
  • Detection of potentially unnecessary or inappropriate timeout configurations
  • PDF documentation for security audits and configuration reviews

New API Function: Reset TCP Connection Timeout

In addition to reporting, Firewall Toolbox Professional allows administrators to reset modified TCP connection timeout settings directly through the SonicWall API.

Key Features:

  • Selection of access rules with modified TCP timeout settings
  • Reset of selected rules to a standardized timeout value of 15 minutes
  • Direct configuration changes through the SonicWall API
  • Simplified remediation of inconsistent timeout configurations

Improve Configuration Consistency and Firewall Performance

Unnecessarily long TCP timeouts may consume connection table resources, while excessively short values can disrupt applications that maintain idle connections.

With the new reporting and API capabilities, administrators can identify deviations, review their operational impact, and apply consistent timeout settings where appropriate.

Audit your TCP connection timeout settings with Firewall Toolbox and use the Professional Edition to remediate unnecessary deviations directly through the SonicWall API.

Firewall Toolbox Version 3.0 – Major Release (Summer 2026)

This makes Firewall Toolbox more accessible to international administrators, IT service providers, and security auditors.

Improved Security Auditing and Reporting

Version 3 includes enhancements to the analysis and reporting capabilities of Firewall Toolbox, helping administrators review SonicWall configurations more efficiently.

Key Benefits:

  • Comprehensive analysis of SonicWall firewall configurations
  • Structured security and configuration audit reports
  • Professional PDF documentation
  • Improved presentation of configuration findings
  • Support for security reviews and compliance documentation

Enhanced Usability and Stability

In addition to multilingual support, Version 3 includes various improvements to the user experience, internal processing, and overall application stability.

These enhancements help streamline daily auditing tasks and make Firewall Toolbox easier to use in different operational environments.

Local Analysis – Your Configuration Data Stays Private

Firewall Toolbox continues to process firewall configuration data locally, without requiring configuration files to be uploaded to a cloud-based analysis service.

Existing TSR and EXP configuration files can be analyzed without establishing a live connection to the firewall.

This makes Firewall Toolbox particularly useful for external security audits, IT service providers, offline assessments, and firewall documentation.

Continuing Development

Version 3.0 provides the foundation for further improvements and additional reporting and management capabilities.

With ongoing development, Firewall Toolbox continues to help SonicWall administrators identify configuration risks, improve security transparency, and simplify documentation.

Firewall Toolbox Version 2.0 – Major Release (Spring 2026)

Introducing API-Based Firewall Management

Firewall Toolbox Version 2.0 marked a major step forward in the development of our SonicWall auditing and management solution.

While earlier versions focused primarily on analyzing firewall configurations and generating security reports, Version 2 introduced the ability to make configuration changes directly on SonicWall firewalls through the SonicOS API.

This transformed Firewall Toolbox from a reporting and auditing tool into a solution that also supports active firewall configuration management.

New Feature: API-Based Configuration Changes

The most significant enhancement in Version 2 is the introduction of API-based configuration management.

Administrators can now use Firewall Toolbox to identify configuration issues and perform selected corrective actions directly on the firewall.

Key Features:

  • Direct communication with SonicWall firewalls through the SonicOS API
  • Selection of firewall rules and policies for configuration changes
  • Bulk disabling of selected access rules and NAT policies
  • Bulk deletion of selected access rules and NAT policies
  • More efficient cleanup of obsolete and unnecessary firewall configurations
  • Reduced manual effort when managing large rule sets

These capabilities help administrators move directly from identifying configuration issues to implementing corrective actions, without having to modify every rule or policy individually.

Significantly Expanded Reporting Capabilities

Version 2 also introduced numerous additional reports, further extending the auditing and documentation capabilities of Firewall Toolbox.

Reporting Highlights:

  • Security analysis of firewall access rules
  • Identification of unused and disabled access rules
  • Analysis of NAT policies and unused configurations
  • Review of address objects and configuration dependencies
  • VPN configuration and security assessments
  • Firewall configuration and security documentation

The expanded reporting capabilities provide greater visibility into complex firewall configurations and help identify potential security risks, unnecessary rules, and opportunities for configuration optimization.

From Security Audit to Corrective Action

By combining detailed configuration analysis with API-based management functions, Version 2 significantly improves the efficiency of firewall maintenance.

Administrators can identify potentially problematic configurations, review the findings, and perform selected corrective actions directly from Firewall Toolbox.

This is particularly valuable for IT service providers, security consultants, and administrators managing complex SonicWall environments.

More Than Just a Reporting Tool

With Version 2.0, Firewall Toolbox evolved into a comprehensive solution for SonicWall configuration auditing, documentation, and selected firewall management operations.
