You need a license that corresponds to the firewall type (TZ, NSV, NSA, NSSP). This license allows unlimited reports on the firewall using the registered serial number of the appliance. In Firewall Toolbox, you can add multiple licenses to analyze different firewalls with a single installation. A SonicWall high-availability (HA) cluster requires only one license. You are permitted to install the software on multiple computers.
During the use of the Data Submission Wizard (TSR/EXP), a quick license check is performed. If no license is present, you will be prompted to add a license code. The license is then validated via the backend (cryptlex.com). Further license checks are performed when uploading the configuration.
You can download, install, and test the software from this website. At the end of the “Data Submission Wizard,” you have the option to click “Free Trial” to see if the data upload is successful and to access some (abbreviated) reports. A free trial is only available for one firewall serial number!

Firewall Toolbox communicates with external services only to a limited extent. It connects to Cryptlex to validate and enforce the software licence. Each time the application starts, it also checks firewall-toolbox.com for available software updates.
Firewall Toolbox does not use AI to process firewall data. All configuration and diagnostic data imported from a firewall is processed locally on the user’s computer and is not uploaded to the cloud or transmitted to third-party servers. Only the minimal information required for licence validation is exchanged with Cryptlex.

Firewall Toolbox is a software-based audit, documentation and management solution. It automatically analyses the firewall configuration and operational information contained in the EXP and TSR files and generates detailed, reproducible reports. The analysis can be performed whenever required—without scheduling a separate consulting engagement.
This makes Firewall Toolbox particularly useful for regular and repeatable audits, internal compliance checks, firewall documentation and ongoing system maintenance. Reports can be regenerated after configuration changes, allowing administrators and auditors to review the firewall as often as necessary.
Firewall Toolbox also goes beyond reporting. With API access enabled, identified objects such as unused firewall rules, NAT policies and address objects can be selected for maintenance operations, while configuration data required to restore changes is retained.
